Dr. Fuhrman in Korea

This is Dr. Fuhrman reporting from Seoul, South Korea. Physicians here are just as unaware about nutrition as they are in the United States. The difference is they are enthusiastic to learn more about nutritional science and how they can incorporate the most advanced discoveries into their practice.

I am spending this week in Korea conducting seminars for diverse group of physicians and health professionals in various specialties. Doing lots of bowing, shaking hands, taking photos, signing autographs and jumping on tables.

It’s fun to watch a room full of physicians chant in unison, "GOMBS!"

Perhaps doctors aren't beholden to just prescribing medicine with fear of lawsuit, while operating our of bounds of conventional medicine.

I just got back from Miami vacationing with my wife's Cuban family. All are overweight.

While getting into the jacuzzi my brother-in-law said it was good for his hemorrhoids. He's a doctor and his son asked him what causes hemorrhoids. Doctor BIL said it's from sitting on the toilet too long. Doctor then told me he's had hemorrhoids since he was 20.

I told doctor's son hemorrhoids were caused by diet, but who would he believe--doctor father or me?

The Asians as a whole are not as married to steak and dairy and processed food as we are here in the US. I think there is a better chance of this catching on with them than here.

Mike, I don't know about that, beef short ribs and bulgogi (marinated beef) are the two signature dishes of Korea. Japanese are very fond of Kobe and wagyu beef. Specialty "meat" restaurants serving hamburger steaks or Yakiniku are very popular, and there is a 7-11 and McDonald's on every corner of Tokyo. The Japanese in particular have a dizzying array of candy and junk food which puts the USA to shame in terms of sheer variety. Noodles and white rice are basically "processed food" and are the main staple foods in every asian country. Everything in China/Japan/Korea is flavored with soy sauce which is the most concentrated source of sodium I've ever seen...

Dairy is not very popular for historical reasons and the fact that something like 66% of asians are lactose intolerant.

That hemorrhoid comment really grossed me out and I would have jumped out of the hot tub... but that is problematic when even an M.D. would say that's caused by sitting... If that's the case wouldn't exercise fix it? Regardless , it makes me wonder if people in the health industry like that actually believe what they're saying or if they're in denial.

Anyway, cheers to Dr. Fuhrman! You're doing an awesome job here and in Korea!

Wow! This is so exciting that Korea is getting Dr. Fuhrman's information. The world will benefit from his knowledge and research. I am really enjoying the healthy benefits too!

@RW, Noodles is not a staple in every Asian country. Please keep in mind that India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc are Asian countries as well.

I'm delighted to hear that doctors from Korea are open to this information. Doesn't surprise me. Perhaps they are less regulated by big pharma. Rock on!

I live in Busan - wish I'd known Dr Fuhrman was coming earlier! would have loved to attend the lecture (if the public were allowed)..

RE Korean food.. the 'traditional' Korean diet is lots of veg - rice and small amounts of fish (very little meat).. and always fruit for dessert...

Restaurant eating is very different from family meals (i've got a Korean wife and eat with the in-laws often)they eat a traditional diet still..

But the Koreans see meat as wealth and are now eating loads more of it..especially eating out.

But... vegetarianism is also now growing fast too..in the last 4 years 50 vegan restaurants have popped up round the country (rather too much soy meat to be Dr Fuhrman approved admittedly)..but a step forward..

duncan, Thats what I thouught ,my understanding from The China Study and other documentaries that I have read is that the more remote the area in Asia, the more rice and veges in the food and the less meat and cheese, the closer to the city areas the more Western the diet , more meat , more heart disease , more diabeties, more cancer.

Even Korean restaurants here in the states that offer spiced ribs etc also offer many dishes made with vegetables and rice , compared with Amercian rib houses that slop on macaroni and cheese, fries, cole slaw laden with sugar and fat ,limp white bread they offer much better choices if you are stuck in one.

People in Hong Kong eat a lot of white rice and carbohydrates, but most of them aren't fat because they walk A LOT. And it's walking at a very quick pace too. That's how people there are used to living. Of course, if they didn't eat desserts and processed foods, they would be even better off. The people who are more physically active probably need more white rice and potatoes just to power themselves.
